Engraving, in it's basic form involves machining a layer of the surface material away to permanently mark or indent numbers and text. This can be done on any material so long as it is relatively flat (circular trophies can be engraved by skilled specialists). It is one of the most durable forms of producing labels and is ideal for differently numbered/text labels so common in the electrical industry. It is also widely used where harsh environments would mean that standard printing would eventually be removed by constant abrasion.
The types of product produced by engraving include:- door/office nameplates, valve discs, dials, fire alarm zone panels, control panels, ident markings, jig templates and stencils.
The materials commonly used involve a multi-layer sandwich of different colours so that engraving the top layer away reveals the different coloured layer beneath, the two main types are 'Traffolite', a highly chemical resistant laminate and 'Gravoply' a softer and more flexible laminate. Other materials include Brass, Aluminium, Bronze, Mild Steel, Stainless Steel, Imitation Brass and Aluminium.
